PM Abiy: Debre Markos Airport Operationalization to Boost Trade, Investment, Tourism, Open New Chapter of Growth

Addis Ababa, July 12, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the operationalization of the newly renovated and upgraded King Tekle Haymanot Airport in Debre Markos will significantly enhance trade, investment, and tourism activities, opening a new chapter for economic growth in the area and the country at large.

The Prime Minister made the remarks today while officially inaugurating the airport in Debre Markos city, East Gojjam Zone of Amhara Region, following a major rehabilitation project that restored the facility after nearly three decades of inactivity.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Abiy said the commencement of air transport services at the airport has responded to the long-standing demand of the people of Debre Markos and surrounding communities, who had been waiting for its restoration for many years.

He stated that the airport’s operationalization will strengthen Ethiopia’s transport infrastructure, stimulate local trade and investment, expand tourism activities, and improve access to markets by creating new economic opportunities.

Constructed with a 2,400-meter-long and 30-meter-wide runway, the airport has the capacity to accommodate larger passenger and cargo aircraft, including Bombardier Q400 and Boeing 737 planes.

The Prime Minister noted that the launch of air services, including the possibility of up to three daily flights, will improve mobility and connectivity. However, he stressed that restoring land transportation capacity remains equally important to ensure citizens can fully benefit from improved infrastructure.

Prime Minister Abiy also emphasized the importance of peace and dialogue in enabling citizens to safely use transport services and participate in development activities. He said the government remains open to engaging with any party willing to resolve differences through peaceful and constitutional means.

Highlighting Debre Markos’ historical significance, the Prime Minister described the city as a place that has historically connected Gojjam with Wollo and Wollega, fostering social ties, trade, and development. He said the area should continue serving as a symbol of unity and solidarity.

He recalled that Debre Markos was once recognized among Ethiopia’s leading cities, noting that it was ranked first among 20 cities in the country decades ago. He called on citizens to work together to restore the city’s former prominence by embracing cooperation and development.

The Prime Minister warned against ethnic division, sectarianism, and extremist narratives, saying such approaches weaken social cohesion and hinder national progress. He urged Ethiopians to focus on common interests, including peace, development, prosperity, trust, and mutual respect.

He further said Ethiopia has experienced both periods of peace and conflict throughout its long history, but emphasized that the country’s current priority should be accelerating development and improving the livelihoods of its people.

Prime Minister Abiy said development requires time, cooperation, and collective responsibility, calling on citizens to work together to complete major projects, address development needs, and create a better future for the next generation.

He also urged Ethiopians to uphold the spirit of Medemer (synergy), saying unity, peace, and shared purpose are essential to realizing the country’s development aspirations.
