NISS Showcases Yearlong Achievements in Intelligence Operations, Security Capacity and Global Engagement

Addis Ababa, July 26, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Intelligence Agency has showcased yearlong achievements in intelligence operations, security capacity building, institutional reform, technology development and international engagement as part of its 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year performance report.

The agency said the performance registered during the fiscal year was guided by a comprehensive assessment of global, regional and national security developments, enabling it to identify emerging threats, strengthen intelligence analysis and provide timely information for decision-making and operational activities.

It noted that intelligence operations conducted throughout the year focused on safeguarding national interests, protecting citizens’ security and supporting efforts to build a strong and stable state.

A major focus of the agency’s work was ensuring the security of Ethiopia’s 7th national election. The agency said it successfully carried out its responsibilities by closely monitoring potential threats, disrupting activities of terrorist and armed groups, and contributing to the peaceful conduct of the national electoral process.

The performance report also highlighted efforts to counter activities that undermine economic reforms and national economic interests. Through intelligence operations targeting illegal activities and economic crimes, the agency said it supported measures aimed at protecting citizens’ interests and ensuring a stable economic environment.

In the area of foreign intelligence, the agency reported progress in collecting and analyzing strategic information related to regional and global power dynamics and geopolitical developments. It said the intelligence gathered helped support decisions aimed at protecting Ethiopia’s national security, interests and dignity.

The agency further noted that cooperation and partnerships with counterpart institutions abroad played a significant role in combating terrorism, transnational crimes, and illegal financial and arms transfers.

According to the report, the agency also strengthened its capacity to protect key government institutions, strategic infrastructure projects, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), and major national events through improved security systems supported by technology.

It said enhanced security arrangements contributed to Ethiopia’s growing role as a preferred destination for international conferences, while aviation security measures supported the continued reliability and competitiveness of Ethiopian Airlines.

The agency emphasized that technology and institutional reform remained central to its efforts to build a modern intelligence system. It said it has expanded the use of new technologies in intelligence gathering, security operations and psychological warfare capabilities, while working to reduce dependence on external support.

The report also highlighted efforts to strengthen domestic technological capacity, including the development of locally produced technologies and systems that support intelligence and security operations.

The agency said reforms introduced in recent years are aimed at building a more capable institution equipped to address evolving security challenges in a rapidly changing global environment.

It added that continued efforts are underway to further enhance operational effectiveness, technological capabilities and institutional performance through new strategic approaches.

The performance review reflects the agency’s broader mission of combining intelligence, technology, operational readiness and international cooperation to strengthen Ethiopia’s security framework and support national priorities.
