Ethiopian Defense Minister Holds Talks with EU Ambassador on Security and Peacebuilding
Addis Ababa, October 29, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopian Defense Minister Mohamed Idris held talks with European Union (EU) Ambassador to Ethiopia Sophie From-Emmesberger on the current security situation, peacebuilding efforts and regional developments.
During the discussions, Minister Mohamed briefed the ambassador on Ethiopia’s response to the conflict, stating that although the war was not initiated at Ethiopia’s will, the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) had successfully repelled the attack within a short period while safeguarding public security.
He also outlined the political developments in Tigray Region, where a caretaker administration has been established to facilitate a democratic election after six months and prepare the region to resume self-administration.
The minister called on the EU to support the government’s disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) program aimed at reintegrating former combatants into civilian life.
He further emphasized the need for EU assistance in addressing the region’s development needs, revitalizing social institutions affected by the conflict, restarting development activities and enabling communities to return to normal life.
Ambassador From-Emmesberger expressed appreciation for the briefing, noting that the EU was closely monitoring developments in Tigray Region and that the discussions had provided her with a clearer understanding of the ongoing processes.
She reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting the Ethiopian government’s peacebuilding and reconstruction efforts.
