AFRICOM Commander Cites Ethiopian Airlines as Example of Successful Logistics Investment

Addis Ababa, July 27, 2026 (FMC) — Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) General Dagvin R.M. Anderson has highlighted Ethiopian Airlines as an example of the importance of investing in logistics, maintenance, and sustainment capabilities to build long-term institutional success.

General Anderson made the remarks during the opening of the 2026 African Communications and Logistics Symposium (ALCS), co-hosted by Ethiopia and the United States in Addis Ababa.

Speaking about the critical role of logistics in security and development, the AFRICOM Commander said successful operations and institutions depend not only on acquiring equipment and technology but also on establishing the infrastructure, systems, and support capabilities needed to sustain them.

Citing Ethiopian Airlines as a practical example, he recalled the contribution of American aviation pioneer John C. Robinson, who supported the establishment and development of the airline following the Second World War.

General Anderson said Robinson understood that building a successful airline required more than purchasing aircraft and training pilots, emphasizing the importance of investment in logistics, depot maintenance, and sustainment systems.

He noted that Ethiopian Airlines’ continued success decades later, as Africa’s largest airline, demonstrates the value of that long-term vision and investment in supporting infrastructure.

The AFRICOM Commander said the same principle applies to security institutions, stressing that no force can operate effectively without reliable logistics and communications systems.

He said the symposium provides an opportunity for African countries, international partners, and industry representatives to exchange experiences, explore innovations, and develop practical solutions to strengthen logistics and communications capabilities.

General Anderson also underscored Africa’s importance to global security and stability, noting that the continent faces complex challenges, including terrorism, illicit trafficking, and other transnational threats that require coordinated responses.

He emphasized the need for stronger cooperation, interoperability, and innovation, saying logistics and communications are essential foundations for readiness, operational effectiveness, and the ability to protect communities.

The 2026 African Communications and Logistics Symposium has brought together representatives from more than 40 African countries and international industry partners to discuss ways of enhancing logistics systems, secure communications, and collective security cooperation.
