Ethiopia Calls for Stronger Cross-Border Security Cooperation to Counter Evolving Terrorism Threats

Addis Ababa, August 5, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Federal Police has emphasized the need to strengthen security information sharing and coordinated cross-border security mechanisms to effectively counter terrorism threats.

Deputy Commissioner General of the Ethiopian Federal Police Ristu Yirdaw made the remarks while participating in an international counter-terrorism seminar held in Weining City, China.

Leading the Ethiopian delegation at the seminar, Deputy Commissioner General Ristu said terrorism has become increasingly transnational, with its global reach continuing to expand.

He noted that the rapid advancement of digital technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, is being exploited by terrorist groups for destructive activities, fundraising, recruitment and facilitating attacks with greater speed and wider reach.

Terrorism has become a complex and constantly evolving security challenge, posing significant threats to law enforcement institutions and the international community, he said.

The Deputy Commissioner General stressed that no single country can address terrorism alone, underscoring the importance of technology-driven counter-terrorism measures, enhanced intelligence cooperation and integrated border security systems.

He highlighted Ethiopia’s experience in combating terrorism, describing the country as one of Africa’s leading nations in counter-terrorism efforts. He said Ethiopia remains committed to sharing its experiences and expertise with partner countries.

Ristu also emphasized the importance of international platforms such as the seminar in connecting researchers, policymakers and practitioners to exchange studies, experiences and best practices in counter-terrorism.

He added that building professional networks among experts and security leaders would help facilitate faster intelligence exchange and strengthen efforts to prevent and combat terrorism.

The Ethiopian Federal Police said China expressed appreciation for Ethiopia’s cooperation and acknowledged the support provided to Ethiopia’s government, particularly the Federal Police, in areas of counter-terrorism, security and law enforcement.
