PM Abiy Reaffirms Ethiopia’s Readiness to Build BRICS Partnerships in Minerals, Renewable Energy and Industry
Addis Ababa, September 12, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reaffirmed Ethiopia’s readiness to build partnerships within BRICS around minerals, renewable energy and the country’s growing industrial base, while stressing the opportunity to bring capital, technology and markets together to create greater value where resources are found.
Prime Minister Abiy made the remarks at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, held under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
He highlighted the economic capabilities represented across BRICS and the opportunity to connect them in ways that generate greater value and strengthen productive activity where resources are found.
“Across BRICS, we have capital, technology and markets. The opportunity is to bring them together, create more value, and ensure that value is generated where resources are found,” he said.
Prime Minister Abiy said Ethiopia is ready to build partnerships across minerals, renewable energy and its growing industrial base, highlighting opportunities to connect the country’s resource potential and expanding productive capacity with capital, technology and markets available across BRICS.
The remarks underscore an approach to BRICS engagement focused not only on access to markets and investment, but also on generating greater value within resource-producing economies and strengthening productive capacity.
Prime Minister Abiy also stressed the need to build resilience into systems and ensure that technological advances respond to Africa’s development priorities.
“We must also build resilience into our systems, ensure AI serves the needs of our continent,” he said, underscoring the importance of harnessing artificial intelligence in ways that serve Africa’s needs and priorities.
He further called for advancing predictable debt resolution, highlighting the importance of greater predictability in addressing debt challenges as countries pursue development and economic transformation.
On climate action, Prime Minister Abiy stressed the need to link climate priorities with economic transformation, emphasizing that climate action can advance alongside productive economic development.
“[We must] link climate action with economic transformation,” he said.
Concluding his remarks, Prime Minister Abiy highlighted the broader potential of collective action within BRICS, saying, “Together, BRICS can turn cooperation into shared value, resilience and sustainable growth.”
The Prime Minister’s participation comes as the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit brings together the expanded membership to advance cooperation on economic development, global governance, technology, sustainable development and other shared priorities under India’s 2026 chairship. The summit is being held on September 12–13 in New Delhi.
