Ethiopia Set to Constitute Government for New Five-Year Term as Newly Elected Parliament Opens on October 5

Addis Ababa, September 23, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia is set to constitute its government for a new five-year term as the newly elected House of Peoples’ Representatives opens on October 5, following the successful conclusion of the country’s 7th General Election, Speaker of the House Tagesse Chafo announced.

The proceedings will mark the commencement of the new parliamentary term and the constitution of the federal executive in accordance with the country’s constitutional framework.

In a message concerning the upcoming proceedings, Speaker Tagesse recalled that the 7th General Election was successfully concluded with the participation of 42 political parties, 10,438 candidates and more than 54 million voters.

He described the election as peaceful, democratic, fair and credible.

Citing Article 50(3) of the Constitution, the Speaker noted that the House of Peoples’ Representatives is the highest organ of the federal government and is accountable to the Ethiopian people.

He further cited Article 58(2), which stipulates that the term of the House begins on the Monday of the final week of September.

Under Article 56 of the Constitution, the political party or coalition of parties that secures a majority of seats in the House organizes and leads the executive branch of the federal government.

Accordingly, the government for the new five-year term will be constituted and the House of Peoples’ Representatives will open on October 5, 2026.

Speaker Tagesse said all necessary preparations for the proceedings have been fully completed, according to information from the House.
