PM Abiy Calls on Ethiopians to Turn National Unity into Collective Responsibility for Ethiopia’s Future

Addis Ababa, October 12, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called on Ethiopians to take an active role in shaping the country’s future, emphasizing national unity as the foundation of Ethiopia’s path to prosperity in a message marking the 19th National Flag Day.

In his message, issued under this year’s theme, “Our Flag for National Consensus and Unity,” the Prime Minister described the national flag as a symbol of Ethiopia’s shared history, sovereignty and the strength derived from standing together amid diversity.

Reflecting on the historic victory at Adwa, PM Abiy recalled how Ethiopians from different parts of the country set aside their differences and united, capturing the attention of the world. He said the example set by their ancestors demonstrated how unity could prevail over adversity, adding that every generation must decide how to respond to the enduring call to stand together.

The Prime Minister linked this responsibility to the philosophy of Medemer, challenging Ethiopians to consider whether they would remain spectators to their country’s destiny or embrace ownership of its future.

He stressed that Ethiopia’s languages, religions and identities form part of a shared national fabric woven through centuries of common history. Contributing to the country’s future, he noted, begins with individual acts of courage and a commitment to working towards a vision that transcends personal interests.

PM Abiy also underscored the responsibility of the present generation to preserve and strengthen the country inherited from its predecessors and pass it on to future generations.

Concluding his message, the Prime Minister urged Ethiopians to reflect on their individual contributions to national unity and prosperity, placing collective responsibility at the heart of this year’s Flag Day observance.
