Ethiopia’s National Flag Must Unite Its Diverse Peoples in Pursuit of Shared Prosperity – Deputy PM

Addis Ababa, October 12, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh has called on Ethiopians to uphold their national flag as an enduring symbol of unity, sovereignty and shared aspirations, stressing that the country’s diversity must serve as a source of strength in building a peaceful and prosperous future.

In a message marking the 19th National Flag Day on Monday, Temesgen said the flag embodies the values of Medemer, the strength of national unity and Ethiopia’s continued aspirations for greatness.

He noted that the national flag honours the sacrifices of previous generations, reflects the determination of Ethiopians today and symbolizes their collective hopes for a prosperous future. It remains an enduring emblem of the country’s sovereignty, dignity and national pride.

The Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed the Medemer Government’s commitment to advancing Ethiopia through national unity, lasting peace, sustained development and inclusive prosperity.

He emphasized that the flag should unite Ethiopians rather than divide them, noting that differences in ethnicity, language, culture and faith do not diminish their common Ethiopian identity, shared destiny and collective aspiration for national progress.

Temesgen said the philosophy of Medemer calls on citizens to embrace diversity as a source of strength, deepen the values that bring them together and turn their shared commitment to Ethiopia’s progress into collective action.

He further urged Ethiopians to renew their commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty, strengthening unity, preserving peace and building a prosperous country worthy of the sacrifices of past generations and the aspirations of those yet to come.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s message placed national unity and the principles of Medemer at the centre of Ethiopia’s pursuit of lasting peace and inclusive development, emphasizing the national flag’s role as a symbol of common purpose across the country’s diverse communities.
