Ethiopia’s Meteorological Capacity Vital to Protecting Lives, Strengthening Resilience: PM Abiy

Addis Ababa, October 13, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has underscored the importance of strengthening Ethiopia’s meteorological capacity through investment in scientific research, modern technology, and reliable data infrastructure to improve climate resilience and support national development.

In a social media post following his visit to the Ethiopia Meteorology Institute, the Prime Minister highlighted the institution’s longstanding contribution to the country’s development and resilience, emphasizing the importance of meteorological data collection and scientific advancement in understanding and responding to changing weather and climate conditions.

He stressed that strengthening the institute requires sustained investment in human capacity, modern technologies, and data infrastructure to improve services essential to agriculture, water management, public health, aviation, and disaster risk management.

The Prime Minister particularly emphasized the role of early warning systems in anticipating risks, identifying priority areas for intervention, and enabling timely and effective responses.

He noted that reliable meteorological data, when translated into actionable information, can save lives, protect livelihoods, and support informed decision-making.

PM Abiy also highlighted that effective meteorological services extend beyond satellite observations, relying on a nationwide network of data collection stations and data centres where information is gathered, processed, and analyzed to inform timely action.

The visit underscored the importance of strengthening Ethiopia’s meteorological institutions and capabilities to better anticipate climate-related risks and support development planning across key sectors of the economy.
