Agricultural Transformation in East Borana Advancing Ethiopia’s Food Self-Sufficiency Drive: PM Abiy

Addis Ababa, May 27, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed says the ongoing agricultural transformation in the East Borana Zone of Oromia regional state reflects Ethiopia’s continued progress toward achieving food self-sufficiency.

During a visit to agricultural development sites in the area earlier today, the Prime Minister observed ongoing dry season wheat farming activities and crop production efforts being carried out across the zone.

In a social media message shared following the visit, Abiy stated that farmers in the zone have cultivated more than 176,223 hectares of land during the current production season, with an expected harvest exceeding 3.1 million quintals of crops.

According to Abiy, the production drive is being carried out through organized cluster farming involving over 101,000 households, alongside the use of modern tractors to improve productivity.

The Prime Minister highlighted large-scale wheat production in Liben District, as well as major harvests of teff, maize, and haricot beans, noting that the efforts are contributing to strengthening the country’s domestic food supply.
