Addis Ababa, September 9, 2026 (FMC) — Mayor Adanech Abiebie has hailed Addis Ababa’s rise to become the world’s second most climate-resilient city and the top-ranked city in Africa, saying the recognition underscores the capital’s growing leadership in global sustainability and environmental planning.
The recognition comes from a report by geospatial intelligence company AlphaGeo, which assessed 72 major cities through its Climate Risk & Resilience Index. Addis Ababa ranked second globally in the assessment.
Mayor Adanech said the ranking reflects Addis Ababa’s growing role in advancing sustainable urban development and environmental planning, placing the Ethiopian capital at the forefront of global efforts to build climate-resilient cities.
The recognition places Addis Ababa among the world’s leading cities in climate resilience and highlights the capital’s rising profile in sustainability and environmentally conscious urban development.
The Mayor congratulated Addis Ababa and its residents on the recognition, describing it as a reflection of the city’s continuing transformation and its growing contribution to the global sustainability agenda.
