Addis Ababa Delivers Nearly Half a Million Homes in Five Years, Expands Inclusive Housing Development

Addis Ababa, October 29, 2026 (FMC) — The Addis Ababa City Administration says nearly half a million homes have been built and transferred to residents over the past five years, as the city expands housing development and access to homeownership.

The administration reported that 496,971 homes were constructed and handed over during the period, reflecting efforts to address housing needs through a range of development approaches.

According to the administration, the government has played a leading role in housing development while creating opportunities for real estate developers, private developers, cooperatives and volunteers to participate in construction.

More than 4,200 homes were also built and transferred to beneficiaries during the first quarter of the current fiscal year alone, including homes in the Merkato Begonnet neighborhood, the administration said.

Beyond expanding the housing supply, the city administration said the developments are designed to create cleaner, more livable neighborhoods, with children’s playgrounds, walking spaces and areas that encourage social interaction and strengthen community ties.

The administration added that its housing initiatives target a broad range of beneficiaries, including people displaced by development projects, low-income households, older people, veterans and other citizens seeking homes.

According to the Mayor’s Office, the initiatives aim to broaden access to housing and ensure that different segments of society benefit from the city’s development efforts.
