Addis Ababa, September 25, 2026 (FMC) — Motorcycle riding has been prohibited in Addis Ababa indefinitely as of today, September 25, according to the Addis Ababa Police Commission.
The restriction applies to all two-wheeled motorcycles except Code 4 motorcycles and those operated by the police, the Commission said.
According to the Police Commission, some individuals suspected of committing robbery and theft have been apprehended while using motorcycles, with investigations underway.
It said motorcycles are also frequently being used by criminals to move between locations and transport stolen property.
The Commission further cited widespread traffic violations among a significant number of motorcycle riders, including running red lights, fleeing after collisions with other vehicles, riding without helmets and using obscured or otherwise difficult-to-read license plates.
The restriction has been introduced to help prevent crime and strengthen enforcement against violations committed by motorcycle riders, the Commission said.
It urged motorcycle riders and owners to comply with the measure, warning that legal action would be taken against those who fail to observe the restriction.
