Addis Ababa, June 25, 2026 (FMC) — The African Union Commission has expressed solidarity with the Government and the people of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela following the powerful earthquakes that struck the country.
In a statement, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed profound solidarity with the Government and the people of Venezuela following the earthquakes.
He extended condolences to the families of those killed and wished a swift recovery to the injured. He also paid tribute to the courage and dedication of emergency responders and all personnel engaged in ongoing rescue and relief operations.
The African Union reiterated its solidarity with Venezuela during this difficult time, expressing hope that ongoing relief, recovery, and reconstruction efforts will help affected communities overcome the impact of the tragedy.
At least 188 people have been killed and more than 1,500 injured as a result of the earthquakes, according to recent reports. Several buildings have collapsed, while infrastructure damage has disrupted transport, electricity, and communications in parts of the country. Authorities have declared a state of emergency, with search and rescue operations ongoing in affected areas, including locations where access remains limited due to debris and damaged roads.
