Addis Ababa, July 23, 2026 (FMC) — Brazil has launched its National Astronomy Plan 2025–2035, a strategic roadmap aimed at advancing space research, strengthening scientific infrastructure and expanding public engagement in astronomy over the next decade.
The plan was coordinated by Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and updates the country’s first astronomy strategy introduced in 2010, taking into account recent developments in science and technology, TV BRICS reported, citing its Brazilian media partner.
The new framework was developed by a Special Commission on Astronomy, with participation from researchers and experts from scientific institutions across Brazil. Through thematic subcommittees, specialists assessed current challenges and outlined priorities to guide the sector’s development.
The plan is built around four major areas, including fundamental scientific research on key questions about the Universe, such as its origin and evolution, the nature of dark matter and dark energy, the formation of stars and galaxies, cosmology and the search for life beyond Earth.
It also places emphasis on strengthening astronomical infrastructure by expanding and improving telescopes, radio telescopes, detectors and other scientific instruments, while evaluating Brazil’s existing research capacity.
Beyond scientific advancement, the strategy seeks to deepen the connection between astronomy and society through science education, public outreach, teacher training, inclusion programs, preservation of scientific heritage and the promotion of scientific culture.
The roadmap further highlights the increasing importance of Big Data in modern astronomy, calling for enhanced capabilities in data science, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing to manage and analyse the growing volume of astronomical information.
Brazil’s decade-long plan is expected to serve as a guide for scientific institutions, researchers and policymakers as the country seeks to strengthen its position in global astronomy and space research.
