Addis Ababa, July 30, 2026 (FMC) — Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh said Ethiopia’s digital transformation should go beyond technological advancement and focus on improving citizens’ lives, expanding economic opportunities, strengthening institutions, and enhancing public services.
In a social media post following the meeting of the National Digital Transformation Council, which he chaired, Temesgen said the Council reviewed progress on priority digital initiatives, set strategic directions, and reaffirmed commitment to accelerating Ethiopia’s digital transformation agenda.
He said discussions focused on the implementation of the Digital Ethiopia Strategy, the rollout of the National Digital ID (Fayda), and the 5 Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative, noting that these flagship programs will continue with renewed focus, stronger coordination, and greater commitment to delivering meaningful results.
The Deputy Prime Minister also said the Council assessed the alignment of emerging digital initiatives with the Digital Ethiopia Strategy to ensure that every investment contributes to building a coherent, secure, and future-ready digital ecosystem.
“Digital transformation is not an end in itself,” Temesgen said, stressing that it serves as a catalyst for expanding economic opportunity, improving public services, strengthening institutions, and enabling innovation.
He emphasized that Ethiopia’s digital public infrastructure must be built with inclusion at its center, ensuring that digital opportunities reach not only urban communities but also women, smallholder farmers, pastoralist communities, young people, entrepreneurs, and historically underserved populations.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the success of Ethiopia’s digital transformation should not only be measured by the technologies deployed but also by the opportunities created and the lives improved through digital solutions.
Temesgen said Ethiopia’s digital transformation is gaining momentum, reaffirming the National Digital Transformation Council’s commitment to providing strategic leadership to accelerate the country’s digital journey and build an inclusive, resilient, and prosperous digital future for all Ethiopians.
