Addis Ababa, September 15, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has continued to translate its citizen-first diplomacy into concrete action, with 1,861 Ethiopians living under difficult conditions in Saudi Arabia repatriated over the past week, the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs said.
The returnees were brought home through 10 flights operated during the week, comprising 1,313 men, 485 women and 63 children. The group also includes 100 adolescents below the age of 18.
The latest repatriation is part of the government’s continued efforts to safeguard the wellbeing of Ethiopian citizens facing difficult circumstances abroad and facilitate their safe return home.
Upon arrival, the returnees are receiving appropriate support and care at the airport and temporary accommodation centres, while efforts are also underway to reunite them with their families, according to the Ministry.
The latest arrivals bring the total number of Ethiopians repatriated under the ongoing operation to more than 101,800 since the government began the return programme on September 15, 2025.
The sustained repatriation effort reflects the government’s emphasis on citizen-first diplomacy, under which the protection, welfare and interests of Ethiopian citizens remain a central consideration in the country’s diplomatic engagement.
By combining diplomatic engagement with practical support for citizens in distress, Ethiopia has continued to strengthen mechanisms for assisting nationals abroad and supporting their return and reintegration at home.
