Ethiopia Prepares Over Eight Billion Seedlings for 2026 Green Legacy Planting Season: PM Abiy

Addis Ababa, June 13, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia has prepared more than eight billion seedlings for planting as the country gears up for the 2026 Green Legacy planting season, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced today.

In a social media post, the Prime Minister said the Green Legacy season has arrived, with over eight billion seedlings raised and ready for planting nationwide ahead of Ethiopia’s main rainy season.

Calling on Ethiopians to take part in the annual campaign, Abiy urged citizens to “plant hope for a greener tomorrow” through the nationwide initiative.

Launched in 2019, Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative has become a flagship national environmental program aimed at restoring degraded landscapes, expanding forest cover, strengthening climate resilience, conserving biodiversity, and promoting sustainable development through mass tree planting and ecosystem restoration.

To date, Ethiopia has planted more than 48 billion seedlings under the Green Legacy Initiative, making it one of the world’s largest environmental restoration campaigns.

This year’s campaign, conducted during Ethiopia’s rainy season, is expected to mobilize millions of Ethiopians to plant the more than eight billion seedlings prepared across urban and rural areas as part of broader efforts to build a climate-resilient green economy.
