Addis Ababa, September 17, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has outlined its vision for harnessing nuclear science and technology as part of its broader national transformation agenda at the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria.
The conference, being held from September 14 to 18, brings together IAEA member states to advance cooperation in nuclear science and technology, safety, security, safeguards and peaceful applications.
Ethiopia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Hailesilassie Suba, presented the country’s position, outlining the government’s vision and plans for the development and peaceful application of nuclear energy, alongside policy, legal and institutional measures being pursued to support the sector.
He underscored the role of nuclear science and technology in advancing Ethiopia’s energy security while expanding its contribution to healthcare, agriculture, industry and scientific research.
Ethiopia also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that nuclear technology is developed and applied safely, securely and exclusively for peaceful purposes, while strengthening cooperation with the IAEA and other relevant stakeholders.
During the conference, the Ethiopian delegation held discussions with the Acting Director of the IAEA Africa Division and officials from the Agency’s Office of Legal Affairs, focusing on ways to further strengthen cooperation. Consultations are expected to continue in Addis Ababa and Vienna to advance implementation of agreed areas of cooperation.
Ethiopia’s participation in the conference reflects its continued engagement in international nuclear cooperation while advancing its national priorities in science, technology, energy and development.
