Ethiopian Lawmakers Approve Cybersecurity, Revised Customs Proclamations

Addis Ababa, June 9, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopian lawmakers have approved draft proclamations on cybersecurity and revised customs administration, aimed at strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure and enhancing customs governance.

The House of People’s Representatives (HPR) approved the Cybersecurity of Key Infrastructures Proclamation, designed to prevent and mitigate cyberattacks targeting essential national systems.

On the occasion, HPR Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs Standing Committee Chairperson Dima Negewo underlined the importance of cybersecurity in safeguarding national peace and sovereignty.

He noted that the approved proclamation will play a key role in preventing cyberattacks on critical infrastructure and will be implemented fairly across both government and privately owned essential systems.

The House also approved the Revised Customs Proclamation.

Speaking during the session, Planning, Budget and Finance Standing Committee Chairperson Desalegn Wedaje said the amended proclamation will make a significant contribution to preventing contraband and improving customs enforcement.

He further explained that the revised legal framework aligns with international agreements Ethiopia has signed, ensures fairness in the customs system, and supports the country’s expanding manufacturing sector while encouraging investment.
