Addis Ababa, July 27, 2026 (FMC) — The United States has commended Ethiopia’s contribution to promoting peace and stability in the Horn of Africa, reaffirming its commitment to expanding defense cooperation with the country.
The remarks were made during talks between Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) Chief of General Staff Field Marshal Berhanu Jula and Commander of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, at the ENDF Headquarters in Addis Ababa on Monday.
The two military leaders discussed the longstanding defense partnership between Ethiopia and the United States, regional security issues, and prospects for strengthening future military cooperation.
Speaking after the meeting, General Anderson said defense cooperation between the two countries has continued to expand across various areas, reflecting the longstanding partnership and shared commitment between Ethiopia and the United States.
He noted that the discussions focused on broadening cooperation, reinforcing joint efforts to combat terrorism, including Al-Shabaab and ISIS in Somalia, and identifying new areas of collaboration.
The AFRICOM Commander praised Ethiopia’s role in advancing regional peace and stability, describing the joint organization of the 2026 African Communications and Logistics Symposium (ALCS) as a clear demonstration of the high level of defense cooperation between the two countries.

He also noted that the symposium provides an important platform for sharing experiences, showcasing emerging technologies, strengthening cooperation with the private sector, and enhancing the capacity of African defense institutions.
According to General Anderson, Ethiopia is also demonstrating leadership by bringing African countries together on a common platform to address shared security challenges.
Director General of Foreign Relations and Military Cooperation at the ENDF, Major General Teshome Gemechu, said the discussions were productive and would further strengthen the longstanding friendship and defense partnership between Ethiopia and the United States.
