Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative a New Path to Reconciliation with Nature and Development: Deputy PM

Addis Ababa, June 16, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is a new path to reconciliation between nature and development, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh said.

In a social media message following the launch of the 2026 Green Legacy planting season, the Deputy Prime Minister said the nationwide initiative—implemented collectively “as one nation for one Ethiopia”—has helped restore degraded landscapes and transform the country’s environment.

He noted that mountains across the country have turned green as a result of sustained efforts under the initiative.

Temesgen further said that springs and watersheds have been revitalized, contributing to the irrigation of land, while areas that were once barren and desert-like have regained more favorable ecological conditions.

He described the progress as a “reconciliation with nature,” saying Ethiopia has withstood the pressure of environmental degradation through collective action.

The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the expansion of fruit trees across the country, linking it to efforts aimed at strengthening food sovereignty alongside environmental protection.

He said the cumulative achievements of the initiative have become a driving force in national efforts to attain food self-sufficiency.

Temesgen further described the Green Legacy Initiative as a tangible expression of national unity and shared success, noting that it reflects how Ethiopians have worked together beyond political affiliations, ideological differences, and other divisions.

He emphasized that unity of purpose has been central to the program’s progress, adding that when Ethiopians stand together, national goals become more achievable and outcomes more impactful.

Looking ahead, he described this year’s Green Legacy campaign as a defining phase in the country’s ongoing efforts, urging Ethiopians to intensify participation and sustain momentum.

He compared the call to action to athletes who accelerate their effort as they approach the final stretch of a race.
