Foreign Diplomats Underscore Ethiopia’s Rising Economic and Regional Importance

Addis Ababa, July 9, 2026 (FMC) — Foreign diplomats have underscored Ethiopia’s growing economic potential, strategic importance and expanding role in advancing regional trade, investment and peace and security.

The diplomats highlighted Ethiopia’s rapid economic progress, geographic significance and increasing influence across Africa, noting that the country’s development efforts, infrastructure expansion and connectivity initiatives are strengthening its position as a key regional hub.

Oman’s Head of Mission to Ethiopia, Afkar Al Farsi, described Ethiopia as a pivotal country in the region due to its vast geographic size, expanding economy and growing regional connectivity.

She said Ethiopia’s efforts to enhance agricultural productivity, combined with its strong transport links, have reinforced its position as a regional hub. She also emphasized the contribution of Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest airline, to regional and continental integration.

Al Farsi noted that Ethiopia-Oman relations have continued to deepen through high-level exchanges, expanding trade and growing investment cooperation.

She said bilateral trade between the two countries includes Oman’s export of iron products and plastic pallets to Ethiopia, while Ethiopia exports coffee, sesame and other agricultural commodities to Oman.

The envoy further highlighted the potential to expand trade ties, particularly through increasing exports of Ethiopian perishable agricultural products to Oman.

She identified agriculture, manufacturing and construction as promising sectors for Omani investors, noting that Ethiopia’s ongoing real estate and infrastructure development projects offer attractive investment opportunities.

Meanwhile, Romania’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Julia Pataki, emphasized Ethiopia’s growing role in promoting regional economic integration, peace and security.

She said Ethiopia remains one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, stressing that free trade and market integration are essential to accelerating economic development across the region.

Pataki highlighted Ethiopia’s contribution to regional peace and stability, as well as its efforts to advance broader continental cooperation.

She also noted that Addis Ababa’s status as the seat of the African Union strengthens Ethiopia’s position as a leading platform for diplomacy, regional integration and collective efforts to address Africa’s shared challenges.

The ambassador added that Ethiopia’s regional influence is expected to continue expanding as the country links its economic transformation with stronger regional security and cooperation initiatives, as reported by local news agency ENA..
