Addis Ababa, August 6, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has reaffirmed the importance of reliable and digitized measurement systems in advancing Africa’s trade integration and digital economic transformation, as the country hosted the 19th Intra-Africa Metrology System (AFRIMETS) General Assembly.
Opening the assembly held at Quality Village under the theme “Metrology for Digital Transformation: Reliable Measurements for Africa’s Future,” Minister of Trade and Regional Integration Kassahun Gofe said Ethiopia’s hosting of the forum demonstrates the government’s commitment to strengthening quality infrastructure and aligning with international quality and standard compliance systems.
The minister emphasized that modern, reliable, and digitalized measurement systems are essential for the successful implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the advancement of a digital economy across the continent.
He noted that Ethiopia has prioritized quality infrastructure development as part of its Homegrown Economic Reform agenda, highlighting the establishment of Quality Village as a reflection of the country’s efforts to enhance standards, competitiveness, and market access.
Kassahun also called on African countries to deepen cooperation in metrology to improve the competitiveness of African products in global markets.
As part of activities surrounding the assembly, participants planted tree seedlings at the Quality Village compound, contributing to Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative.
