Addis Ababa, July 26, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s military is undergoing a major transformation, combining its historic legacy of national defense with modern technology, institutional reforms and enhanced capabilities aimed at safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and addressing emerging security challenges.
The Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), the backbone of Ethiopia’s defense system, has been advancing this transformation through wide-ranging reforms that integrate military experience, contemporary defense science and technological innovation to strengthen operational readiness and professional capacity.
The ENDF represents the evolution of Ethiopia’s long-standing military tradition, blending the country’s historic record of resilience and sacrifice with the demands of modern warfare, including technological advancement, cyber capabilities and innovation-driven defense systems.
A strong and capable defense institution remains central to protecting Ethiopia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national interests. Over the years, the ENDF has continued to restructure itself by improving its command systems, strengthening professional training and adopting modern technologies to meet the changing security environment.
The Ethiopian Army, which maintains a significant role in safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity, has been organized into different operational commands across the country’s eastern, western, northern, southern and central directions. This structure enables the force to maintain a strong presence and respond effectively to security challenges.
The Ethiopian Air Force has also strengthened its capabilities, supported by modern fighter aircraft and helicopters that enhance the country’s air defense readiness.
Recognizing that the nature of warfare continues to change, the ENDF has placed greater emphasis on technological adaptation and innovation.
Through recent reforms, the ENDF has expanded its capacity in emerging areas, including cyber defense, while strengthening its ability to respond to new forms of security threats.
Domestic defense industries have also contributed to this effort by producing and maintaining military equipment, ammunition and vehicles, supporting Ethiopia’s drive toward greater self-reliance in defense production.
Ethiopia has further focused on developing skilled human resources capable of understanding modern warfare strategies while equipping its forces with advanced technologies, including unmanned aerial systems and other defense platforms. Institutions such as SkyWin Aeronautics Industry, which produces unmanned aerial vehicles for both civilian and military applications, reflect the country’s growing focus on defense innovation.
The ENDF is also strengthening its intelligence, surveillance and response capabilities through advanced technologies that enable faster monitoring of threats, improved analysis and more effective operational decision-making.
Beyond protecting national borders, the ENDF has maintained a significant role in international peace and security efforts.
Under the frameworks of the United Nations and the African Union, Ethiopian forces have contributed to peacekeeping missions in countries including Korea, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Liberia and Somalia, demonstrating Ethiopia’s longstanding commitment to regional and global peace.
The transformation of Ethiopia’s military is not only focused on strengthening combat readiness but also on building an institution capable of preventing conflicts, responding effectively to threats and contributing to stability at home and abroad.
Standing on a historic foundation of courage and national service, the Ethiopian National Defense Forces continues to adapt to the demands of the modern era, reinforcing its role as a key pillar of Ethiopia’s sovereignty, security and future development.
