Illegal TPLF Group’s Self-Serving Agenda Betrayed the People of the Tigray Region

Addis Ababa, July 26, 2026 (FMC) — The illegal TPLF group has never been able to represent the people of the Tigray Region, but has instead remained a group organized around its own interests and the pursuit of personal and political gains.

The illegal TPLF group, which controlled power in Ethiopia for nearly three decades, committed grave acts against various communities and institutions, leaving behind deep scars in the country’s history while pushing the nation into economic, social and political crises.

The defunct TPLF group has long been known for prioritizing its own interests over the lives and wellbeing of citizens, disrupting public peace and placing its group agenda above the interests of the people.

Instead of protecting the interests of the people of the Tigray Region, the group continued to pursue the preservation of its own power and privileges during its rule, after losing power and through its current activities, committing acts that caused humanitarian suffering and undermined national stability.

The rump TPLF group attempted to regain the power it lost through public opposition by provoking unnecessary conflicts, killing and abducting citizens, and advancing a divisive political agenda aimed at separating communities that had lived together for generations.

After being removed from power and retreating to Mekelle, the group betrayed the Northern Command by launching an attack against the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) on November 4, 2020 — an act that shocked and saddened Ethiopians across the country.

After openly declaring war, the illegal group, unable to withstand the response of the ENDF, exposed its destructive nature by committing massacres against civilians in Galicoma, Chenna, Mai Kadra and other areas.

The group further demonstrated its disregard for the people of the Tigray Region by seizing humanitarian assistance sent to the region and diverting it to its fighters in the form of rations. The group also exposed children to harmful substances and sent them into conflict, further revealing its disregard for human life.

The actions of the obsolete TPLF group have demonstrated that, since its establishment, it has consistently prioritized its own interests, causing immense suffering for the people of the Tigray Region and creating challenges for the Ethiopian people at large.

The illegal group has once again violated the Pretoria Peace Agreement and continued efforts aimed at dragging the country back into a cycle of conflict while serving the interests of Ethiopia’s historical adversaries.

The group’s continued attempts to use the people of the Tigray Region as a shield to sustain its existence risk exposing the people to further hardship and suffering.

The people of the Tigray Region and the international community should stand against the belligerent and uncompromising actions of the group and work to prevent renewed instability while safeguarding peace and stability.
