Addis Ababa, June 30, 2026 (FMC) — #Ethiopia’s iconic Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches have been ranked among the world’s top five UNESCO World Heritage Sites by an international group of seasoned travelers recognized as “UN Grandmasters” for visiting countries across the globe.
According to a survey reported by Euronews, the historic Lalibela site secured a place among the five most favored UNESCO World Heritage destinations selected by these highly experienced global travelers.
The Ministry of Tourism said the recognition highlights Ethiopia’s rich historical legacy, ancient civilization, and outstanding cultural heritage, further strengthening the country’s position as one of the world’s premier cultural tourism destinations.
The ministry noted that the travelers’ appreciation of Lalibela’s remarkable architectural, artistic, and spiritual significance places the Ethiopian heritage site alongside globally renowned landmarks such as Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the Great Wall of China.
To build on this international recognition, the ministry said it is intensifying efforts to safeguard and preserve the Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches from both natural and human-induced threats. The conservation initiatives are being implemented in line with sustainable heritage management principles to ensure the site’s protection for future generations.
The ministry further stated that heritage conservation is being integrated with the development of modern tourism infrastructure to improve accessibility, safety, and visitor experience while maximizing the tourism sector’s contribution to Ethiopia’s national economy.
