Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum Says Country Ready to Host Iran During 2026 World Cup

Addis Ababa, May 25, 2026 (FMC) — Mexico has expressed readiness to host Iran’s national football team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup should FIFA approve any adjustments to the current tournament arrangements, according to remarks by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum cited by Reuters.

The development comes amid ongoing discussions surrounding Iran’s participation in the global football tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Sheinbaum stated that Mexico is prepared to support FIFA by accommodating Iran’s matches if changes are made to the original schedule, while stressing that the final decision rests solely with world football’s governing body.

Iran’s football federation had earlier requested that its World Cup fixtures be moved away from the United States, citing security and logistical concerns linked to rising geopolitical tensions.

The request reportedly prompted discussions within FIFA regarding possible alternatives, including the potential relocation of some activities to Mexico.

However, FIFA has not announced any official changes to the tournament schedule, and Iran’s group-stage matches are still expected to take place in the United States under the current arrangement.

Reports indicate that Mexico could instead serve as a base for training camps or logistical operations related to the Iranian national team during the tournament.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to kick off on June 11, will mark the first edition of the competition to be hosted by three countries and is expected to be the largest tournament in FIFA history.
