PM Abiy Ahmed Oversees Inauguration of Arada Park, Now a Multi-Purpose Urban Destination in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, April 30, 2026 (FMC) – Arada Park was inaugurated this evening in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, marking the transformation of a previously neglected urban area in Addis Ababa into a multi-purpose destination.

The Office of the Prime Minister stated that the site, which covers 40 hectares, had been characterized by hazardous and dilapidated housing prior to the redevelopment.

The project, according to the Office, represents a profound transformation of the area into a premier multi-purpose urban destination, involving the renovation of more than 700 existing homes and buildings to ensure that development uplifts the community.

Out of the total area, 15 hectares have been dedicated to green space, creating a major urban “lung” in the heart of the city.

The development also integrates mobility infrastructure, including 5 kilometers of asphalt roads, a 6-kilometer pedestrian walkway, and 5 kilometers of cycling and running tracks designed to promote an active urban lifestyle.

Economically, the park accommodates 131 commercial shops, including provisions prioritizing traders relocated from Piassa, as well as seven cafes and restaurants, a supermarket, and a bank branch.

The site further includes a modern sports arena equipped with a gym and seven halls, alongside eight plazas and amphitheaters designed for cultural and social events.

For families, the park features four children’s playgrounds and a miniature city for recreational activities.

The Office noted that the project incorporates a multi-level design approach, placing commercial shops beneath public plazas to maximize efficient urban land use.
