Addis Ababa, May 25, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today extended his best wishes to Africans across the continent and the diaspora on the occasion of Africa Day, calling for renewed commitment to unity, action, and shared continental progress.
In a message shared on his social media pages this morning, the Prime Minister recalled the historic gathering of African leaders in Addis Ababa 63 years ago, where the foundations were laid for a free and united Africa through the establishment of the Organization of African Unity, the predecessor to today’s African Union.
“63 years ago, our forefathers gathered right here in Addis Ababa and dared to dream of a free, united Africa, and that dream still burns bright,” Abiy stated.
The Prime Minister noted that Ethiopia, as host of the African Union headquarters, continues to stand in solidarity with African nations in advancing the spirit of continental unity and cooperation.
Emphasizing the need for practical action to realize Africa’s aspirations, Abiy urged Africans to move “from words to action, from promises to progress,” stressing that the continent’s greatest strength remains its people.
“Africa’s greatest resource has always been her people, and together, WE RISE!” the Prime Minister said in his message.
It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently assumed the role of African Union Champion for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Health, reflecting continental efforts to advance innovation, digital transformation, and technology-driven development across Africa.
Addis Ababa remains central to Africa’s diplomatic and political engagement as host of the African Union and numerous continental institutions, reinforcing Ethiopia’s longstanding historical role in Pan-African cooperation and integration.
