Addis Ababa, May 24, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today hosted African medical practitioners undergoing specialty training in Ethiopia, highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen continental cooperation in medical education and professional development.
In a message shared on his social media pages this evening, the Prime Minister said he broke bread with 128 Rwandan medical practitioners currently pursuing specialty training in Ethiopia, alongside more than 400 other medical professionals from across Africa.
He noted that the gathering brought together physicians engaged in advanced medical training programs within Ethiopian institutions, which continue to attract increasing numbers of trainees from different African countries.
According to the Prime Minister, the practitioners represent a growing community of African doctors dedicating themselves to advanced expertise and excellence required for the continent’s evolving healthcare needs.
He further emphasized that shared learning and collective purpose among African professionals remain central to building stronger health systems across the continent.
“Through shared learning and purpose, we continue building a healthier Africa together,” the Prime Minister stated in his message.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has recently been appointed by the African Union as Champion for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Health, reflecting the continental body’s recognition of his role in advancing digital transformation and the application of emerging technologies to strengthen public service delivery, innovation, and health systems across Africa.
Ethiopia, through its expanding network of public medical universities and referral hospitals, has continued to strengthen its postgraduate medical education capacity, positioning itself as a regional center for advanced clinical training and specialty development for African physicians.
