Ethiopian Air Force Develops Full-Spectrum Readiness to Carry Out Strategic Missions: Commander

Addis Ababa, July 14, 2026 (FMC) — Commander of the Ethiopian Air Force, Lt. Gen. Yilma Merdasa, said the institution has built a strong readiness capacity that enables it to effectively carry out strategic missions and fulfill its responsibility of protecting Ethiopia at any time and under any circumstances.

Lt. Gen. Yilma said the Air Force has achieved notable progress through its reform efforts aimed at building a modern, sustainable, and capable institution.

He explained that the Air Force has strengthened its operational capabilities by focusing on three key pillars: skilled human resources, technological advancement, and enhanced preparedness, enabling it to continue serving as a force that safeguards Ethiopia’s peace and security.

The Commander said the institution has expanded its capabilities through the deployment of modern equipment, improved training programs, and the development of professional expertise, allowing its personnel to effectively utilize acquired knowledge and technology in carrying out their duties.

Highlighting the outcomes of the reform measures, Lt. Gen. Yilma said the Air Force has demonstrated its growing capacity to undertake major missions in different operational environments.

He added that the institution has successfully completed several large-scale projects independently and with reduced costs, reflecting its growing institutional and technical capacity.

The Commander further highlighted the achievements of the Aviation Heavy Maintenance Center, noting that its expanded capabilities and authorization to repair aircraft belonging to other operators demonstrate Ethiopia’s progress in aviation technology and maintenance expertise.

Lt. Gen. Yilma also emphasized the Air Force’s contribution to national defense operations by providing air transportation and combat support to ground forces, according to information shared by the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) with Fana Digital.
