PM Abiy Says Modern Construction Technologies Remove Trade-Off Between Speed and Quality

Addis Ababa, June 09, 2026 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said that modern construction technologies are eliminating the long-standing trade-off between speed and quality in housing delivery, following a visit to a housing development demonstration site in Addis Ababa.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister and members of the Council of Ministers held their 56th regular meeting, during which the Council deliberated on key macroeconomic and fiscal policy matters and approved the Medium-Term Macroeconomic and Fiscal Framework. The Council also forwarded the 2.33 trillion Birr 2026/27 federal budget draft to the House of People’s Representatives for further consideration and final approval.

Following the meeting, the Prime Minister, together with members of the ministerial cabinet, visited a housing development demonstration site showcasing advanced and accelerated construction technologies.

At the site, three modern construction methods were deployed simultaneously: 3D printing technology, light steel prefabrication, and container-based housing systems.

In a social media post shared after the visit, the Prime Minister said the demonstration showed how “premium-quality homes can be delivered in a matter of days and weeks, rather than months and years,” noting that the application of such technologies ensures that speed and quality no longer need to be compromised.

He further stated that this innovation has the potential to fundamentally transform Ethiopia’s national housing program, as it offers a model that can be deployed, replicated, and scaled across different parts of the country.

The Prime Minister also emphasized that advanced technology has been effectively aligned with the country’s national development vision, describing the demonstration site as tangible evidence that Ethiopia is moving in the right direction.
