Addis Ababa, September 24, 2026 (FMC) — President Taye Atske-Selassie has reaffirmed Ethiopia’s unwavering commitment to supporting regional and sub-regional efforts to bring durable and lasting peace to Sudan, stressing that a sustainable resolution must be Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned.
Addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Taye said Ethiopia has consistently supported efforts by sub-regional and regional organizations to advance peace in Sudan.
“We firmly believe that a peaceful resolution can only be achieved through a Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned peace process that reflects the true will and aspiration of the Sudanese people,” he said.
The President said Ethiopia’s position is anchored in its broader commitment to regional cooperation, integration and peace, noting that the country has worked to promote cooperation across Africa through infrastructure development, trade and people-to-people relations.
He said Ethiopia has made notable progress with several neighboring countries, underscoring the importance of regional cooperation in advancing peace, stability and shared prosperity across the continent.
President Taye also said Ethiopia has exercised restraint in the face of what he described as continued interference in its internal affairs by adversarial elements, while maintaining its conviction to become one of Africa’s most prosperous and dynamic development engines.
“Our message to forces of destruction and mayhem is loud and clear. We urge them to respect the sacred right of the people of the whole of Africa to live in peace and prosperity,” he said.
The President’s remarks placed the Sudan peace process within this wider regional vision, with Ethiopia continuing to support diplomatic and institutional efforts aimed at achieving durable peace while maintaining that the process must reflect the will and aspirations of the Sudanese people.
He also reaffirmed Ethiopia’s overarching goal of building a democratic and prosperous country, linking national development and institution-building with the country’s wider commitment to regional peace and cooperation.
Ethiopia’s position on Sudan comes as the international community convenes in New York for the 81st UN General Assembly amid a broad agenda focused on peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, technological transformation and reform of multilateral institutions.
The session is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
A high-level Ethiopian delegation led by President Taye is participating in the General Assembly’s High-Level Week, with Ethiopia engaging discussions on national interests and broader African priorities.
The delegation includes Minister of Planning and Development Fitsum Assefa, Prime Minister’s Advisor on East African Affairs Getachew Reda and representatives of various Ethiopian institutions. Ethiopia is also participating in bilateral and multilateral engagements on the margins of the Assembly to advance discussions on issues of shared interest with international partners.
