Addis Ababa, August 7, 2026 (FMC) — The Prosperity Party of Ethiopia has briefed members of the diplomatic community and international partners on the country’s democratic development process, the conduct of the 7th general election, and its future priorities in institutional strengthening, economic transformation, and peace building.
The high-level briefing, held in Addis Ababa under the theme “Building Democratic Resilience: Ethiopia’s Experience in Conducting the 7th General Election and the Role of the Prosperity Party,” was addressed by the party’s Foreign Relations Sector Head Nebiyu Suhul and Political Sector Head Bikila Hurisa.
Bikila Hurisa said the briefing provided an opportunity to share Ethiopia’s democratic journey and reform experiences with international partners. He highlighted the party’s “Medemer” philosophy, saying it focuses on national unity, shared prosperity, and embracing Ethiopia’s diversity.
He said political and institutional reforms undertaken over the past years included efforts to widen political participation, strengthen democratic institutions, and create a more cooperative political environment.
Bikila said democracy should be demonstrated through practice, not only through statements or documents, adding that the party has focused on strengthening institutions, freedom, peace, and equality.
Regarding the 7th general election, the party said the process was conducted peacefully and inclusively, with broad public participation and engagement from political stakeholders. It described the election outcome as a renewed public mandate and responsibility to deliver on commitments.
The party said the peaceful completion of the election despite challenges demonstrated Ethiopia’s democratic resilience and marked an important milestone in the country’s political journey.
The briefing also highlighted national initiatives including the Green Legacy Initiative, wheat production expansion, food security programs, and urban development efforts, saying these activities have contributed to Ethiopia’s broader transformation agenda and strengthened the connection between public institutions and citizens.
The party further outlined its economic and diplomatic priorities, saying its agenda focuses on multi-sectoral development, citizen-centered diplomacy, stronger relations with neighboring countries, and enhanced regional and international cooperation.
Representatives from the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) expressed readiness to continue working closely with Ethiopia and engaged in discussions on the country’s democratic progress and economic transformation.
Ugandan Ambassador to Ethiopia Rebecca Amuge Otengo praised the 7th general election, saying she was pleased to witness the process firsthand. She commended the focus given to peace and security, public participation, and maintaining close engagement with citizens.
Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia Evgeny Terekhin said he had witnessed five of Ethiopia’s seven elections and described the 7th general election as the best-organized and most inspiring electoral process he had observed.
Concluding the briefing, Bikila Hurisa said the election represents a new mandate and responsibility for the Prosperity Party. He said the party will focus on implementing its commitments, advancing economic reforms, transforming agriculture, reducing poverty, and supporting efforts to build a prosperous Ethiopia.
He also emphasized the role of the ongoing national dialogue in building consensus and consolidating sustainable peace, reaffirming the party’s commitment to strengthening democracy, economic transformation, and lasting peace.
