Selemon Barega Retains Great Manchester Run Title with Commanding Victory

Addis Ababa, May 31, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian distance-running star Selemon Barega successfully defended his AJ Bell Great Manchester Run crown on Sunday, winning the elite men’s 10km race in 27 minutes and 37 seconds.

Barega surged clear in the closing stages to secure back-to-back victories in Manchester, improving on the 27:49 mark he posted to win the event in 2025.

Uruguay’s Santiago Catrofe finished second in 27:39, just two seconds behind the Ethiopian, while Uganda’s Oscar Chelimo completed the podium in 27:42 after a tightly contested race among the leading trio.

American runner Morgan Beadlescomb placed fourth in 27:45, followed by Kenya’s Vincent Ngetich in fifth with 27:49.

Ethiopia was also represented in the top ten by Omar Ahmed, who finished eighth in 28:27.

Barega entered the race as defending champion after claiming victory in the 2025 edition and lived up to expectations in a highly competitive international field featuring some of the world’s leading road runners.

Established in 2003, the Great Manchester Run has grown into one of the world’s most prestigious road-running events. Held annually in Manchester, England, the race attracts elite athletes and tens of thousands of recreational runners from across the globe. The event is renowned for its fast course, enthusiastic crowds and strong elite fields, making it a key fixture on the international road-running calendar.
