The 7th General Election, held on June 1, 2026, was administered by the National Election Board of Ethiopia, with more than 54 million citizens registered to cast their ballots. A total of 42 political parties and independent candidates participated in the electoral process.
The Prosperity Party (PP), led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, secured a decisive victory in the election, winning the majority of seats in the House of People’s Representatives and receiving a mandate to continue leading the federal government.
The election marked another milestone in Ethiopia’s democratic process, as citizens exercised their constitutional right to elect representatives at the federal and regional levels.
The outcome has also been viewed as significant for Ethiopia’s continued role in advancing regional cooperation, peace, and development efforts across Africa.
The election was observed through an African-led and African-owned electoral observation framework, with the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) deploying observer missions to assess the process. The participation of African institutions in monitoring the election reflects the continent’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance, electoral integrity, and peaceful political transitions, while underscoring Africa’s continued democratic trajectory.
