Addis Ababa, July 25, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s National Dialogue has opened a historic space for representatives from all corners of the country to sit together, discuss long-standing challenges and seek shared understanding.
Among those taking part are representatives from the Tigray Regional State, whose engagement has become a significant part of the country’s broader effort to address differences through dialogue rather than confrontation.
The nationwide dialogue process, which followed years of preparation, has brought together more than 4,000 participants drawn from various sections of society, regional states, political parties, civic organizations and the Ethiopian diaspora.
It represents an opportunity to confront issues that have long fueled disagreements and to build a stronger foundation for national consensus.
For Tigray, participation in this historic process carries particular significance. Although circumstances in the region made it difficult for the National Dialogue Commission to conduct direct consultations there, the Commission carried out agenda-gathering activities with Tigray communities living in Addis Ababa and other areas, while representatives from the region have now joined the national-level discussions.
The participation reflects the Commission’s efforts to ensure that voices from Tigray are included in a process designed to address Ethiopia’s shared challenges through peaceful engagement and collective solutions.
The National Dialogue comes at a time when Ethiopia is seeking to move beyond cycles of conflict and division by creating a platform where citizens can openly discuss questions of national importance. The process aims to transform differences into dialogue and disagreements into opportunities for understanding.
For many Ethiopians, the dialogue represents a choice between two paths: returning to confrontation or embracing a peaceful political process that allows citizens to shape the country’s future together.
While the National Dialogue Commission has repeatedly emphasized openness to participation and peaceful engagement, efforts to resolve national questions through dialogue continue amid challenges, including tensions and calls for renewed conflict from some actors.
The inclusion of Tigray representatives demonstrates the broader national character of the dialogue — a process where every regional state and community has a role in shaping Ethiopia’s future.
As Ethiopia’s citizens gather around the dialogue table, the message remains clear: lasting solutions emerge not from conflict, but from conversation, mutual understanding and a shared commitment to coexistence.
