Addis Ababa, August 1, 2026 (FMC) — The House of Federation is committed to advancing social justice, inclusive development and citizens’ wellbeing alongside discharging its constitutional responsibilities, Speaker Agegnehu Teshager said.
The Speaker made the remarks while launching a housing construction program for vulnerable citizens in Gode City of the Somali Region.
Agegnehu said the House of Federation serves as a common institution for all nations, nationalities and peoples of Ethiopia, noting that it has been working beyond its constitutional mandate by giving greater attention to social development and humanitarian services.
He said the annual volunteer activities carried out in different parts of the country, including house construction, educational material support and other people-centered initiatives, have helped strengthen a culture of mutual support in communities and contributed to the broader nation-building process.
Supporting vulnerable citizens is not only about constructing houses but also about restoring hope, safeguarding human dignity and enabling people to aspire for a better future, the Speaker said.
He added that such initiatives generate social benefits while strengthening values of citizenship.
The housing construction project launched in Gode City will help reduce the hardships faced by citizens exposed to rain, wind and cold weather conditions, Agegnehu said, expressing confidence that the work will be completed successfully through the active participation of institutional leaders and employees.
He also emphasized the importance of providing educational materials to students who need support, saying the assistance would enable them to continue their education without interruption and contribute to building the knowledge foundation of the next generation.
Residents who are benefiting from house renovation support said they had lived under difficult housing conditions for many years, adding that the ongoing work has brought renewed hope and psychological relief to them and their families.
Following the volunteer and house renovation initiatives launched at the initiative of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the House of Federation has been conducting various humanitarian activities over the past five years, including summer volunteer services, house renovations, environmental cleaning campaigns, blood donations, educational material support and other community-focused activities across different parts of the country.
As part of the program, the House of Federation also carried out a tree planting activity and provided educational materials to 500 students requiring support.
