ASMIS 2026 Opens in Addis Ababa, Calls for Stronger African Voice in Digital Media NarrativeAddis Ababa, May 8, 2026 (FMC) — The African Social Media Influencers Summit (ASMIS) 2026 officially opened today in Addis Ababa, bringing together prominent digital creators, content producers, media personalities, and communication experts from across the continent.
The two-day summit has convened influencers with large online followings from various African countries to deliberate on the role of digital platforms in shaping public discourse and strengthening Africa’s representation in global media.
Participants at the opening sessions emphasized the increasing influence of social media in shaping public opinion, promoting African culture and tourism, and challenging long-standing stereotypes about the continent.
They noted that Africa’s youthful and digitally connected population presents significant opportunities for social transformation, economic engagement, cultural exchange, and enhanced continental integration through online platforms.
A recurring theme among speakers was the importance of Africans telling their own stories from their own perspectives, with participants stressing that the continent’s realities, achievements, and aspirations are often underrepresented or misrepresented in global narratives.
Several attendees also commended Ethiopia for hosting the summit and expressed appreciation for the hospitality extended to delegates in Addis Ababa.
Speaking to ENA on the sidelines of the event, participants said ASMIS 2026 provides an important platform for networking, collaboration, experience-sharing, and partnerships among African digital creators.
They further noted that the summit is expected to strengthen efforts to showcase Africa’s innovation, cultural heritage, development progress, tourism potential, and success stories to global audiences.
Participants also underlined that the gathering reflects the growing influence of African content creators within the global digital ecosystem and their expanding role in shaping how the continent is perceived internationally.
The summit is set to include panel discussions, experience-sharing sessions, digital innovation showcases, and conversations focused on content creation, monetization, branding, ethical storytelling, and the future of Africa’s digital media landscape.
ASMIS 2026 is also expected to contribute to strengthening people-to-people ties across African countries while encouraging young Africans to leverage digital platforms for creativity, entrepreneurship, and positive social impact.
