AU commends Morocco for strategic role in advancing peace, security and governance

Addis Ababa, April 24, 2026 (FMC) – The African Union Commission (AUC) has commended the Kingdom of Morocco for its growing and strategic contribution to peace, security, and governance across the African continent, highlighting its role in strengthening democratic processes and continental cooperation.

The appreciation was expressed during the opening of the 5th Edition of the Joint Specialized Training for African Union Short-Term Election Observers (STOs), held from April 20 to 24 in Rabat, Morocco. The programme was jointly organised by the AUC’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) and the Government of Morocco.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, delivered a message on behalf of the AU Commission leadership, underscoring Morocco’s sustained commitment to advancing Africa’s governance and security agenda.

In recognition of this contribution, the AU presented an award to Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, acknowledging his role in promoting democratic governance, peacebuilding, and security cooperation across the continent.

The AU noted that Morocco’s engagement reflects its growing position as a key continental actor in shaping Africa’s peace and security architecture, guided by long-term cooperation and support for institutional strengthening.

According to the Commission, the partnership also reinforces ongoing efforts to enhance electoral integrity, democratic governance, and digital transformation within African states, as part of broader continental priorities.

The African Union further emphasized that such collaboration aligns with its wider agenda of strengthening governance systems, conflict prevention mechanisms, and inclusive development across member states.
