AU Commission Backs Africa’s 10 World Cup Representatives, Hails Record Continental Presence
Addis Ababa, June 10, 2026 (FMC) — The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has extended his best wishes to the ten African nations competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing their record representation as a milestone that reflects the growing strength and global competitiveness of African football.
In a statement issued as the tournament kicked off today, the AU Commission Chairperson said the unprecedented level of African participation is a source of continental pride, showcasing the talent, resilience, and determination of African players.
“This record level of African participation reflects the continued rise of African football and the talent, resilience, and determination of its players. It is a moment of continental pride, uniting Africans across all regions in shared hope and celebration,” Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said.
The AU Commission Chairperson noted that the FIFA World Cup remains a unique global event that brings nations and people together through sport, describing it as a platform where “the world meets in peace through sport.”
He further emphasized that African football represents the strength, ambition, and promise of the continent’s youth, stating that the teams competing in the tournament carry not only the expectations of their respective nations but also the aspirations of an entire generation of Africans.
