AU Commission Chairperson Congratulates PM Abiy on Re-Election for Another Five-Year Term

Addis Ababa, October 5, 2026 (FMC) — Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has warmly congratulated Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on his re-election for another five-year term, expressing readiness for continued cooperation with his government on Africa’s integration, peace, security and development agenda.

In a congratulatory message, the AU Commission Chairperson said Ethiopia, as host of the AU Headquarters and the diplomatic capital of Africa, holds a special place within the continental family.

“The Chairperson looks forward to continued close cooperation with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his government in advancing Africa’s integration, peace, security and development agenda,” the message said.

The congratulatory message follows the formal opening of Ethiopia’s 7th parliamentary term, during which the House of Peoples’ Representatives renewed Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s mandate. He subsequently took the constitutional oath before Parliament, beginning another five-year term as head of the Ethiopian Government.
