AU Pledges Stronger Partnerships with the Caribbean, Latin America and African Communities Worldwide

Addis Ababa, August 31, 2026 (FMC) — The African Union has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening partnerships with the Caribbean, Latin America and African communities across the world as part of efforts to forge a stronger, more united and cohesive global African community.

The commitment was underscored in a message by AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf on the occasion of the International Day for People of African Descent.

The message highlighted the enduring bonds between Africa and its diaspora, describing people of African descent across the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and the Pacific as part of one African family, united by shared history and a common aspiration for the future.

It stressed that the African diaspora is an integral part of the African family and an essential partner in advancing the aspirations of Agenda 2063.

The AU’s commitment is also reflected in the African Union Decade of Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations (2026–2035), ongoing efforts toward a Common African Position on reparations, and efforts to strengthen partnerships with the Caribbean, Latin America and African communities worldwide.

The AU Commission Chairperson reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to advancing recognition, justice and development for people of African descent while combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and all related forms of intolerance.

He also paid tribute to the contributions of people of African descent to the development, culture and progress of societies around the world.

“The history of Africa and its diaspora are inseparable. Their futures must be equally so,” he said.

He extended wishes for peace, dignity, justice and prosperity to people of African descent wherever they live, reaffirming the African Union’s determination to work with them toward a stronger, more united and cohesive global African community.
