Burundi President, AU Chair Ndayishimiye Congratulates PM Abiy, Reaffirms AU Partnership with Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, October 5, 2026 (FMC) — Burundi President and African Union (AU) Chairperson Evariste Ndayishimiye has congratulated Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on his re-election for another five-year term, expressing hopes for continued progress, unity and prosperity in Ethiopia.

In a message issued on behalf of the people of Burundi and in his capacity as Chairperson of the African Union, Ndayishimiye wished Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed success in his renewed mandate and expressed hope that the Ethiopian people would see continued progress as the country advances its strategic national priorities.

“The African Union reiterates its steadfast commitment to partnering with the Government and the people of Ethiopia,” Ndayishimiye said, underscoring the continental bloc’s commitment to promoting enduring peace, regional stability, enhanced cooperation and shared economic development across Africa.

The message comes as Ethiopia begins a new five-year political and governance cycle following the opening of the 7th parliamentary term and the formation of the new Medemer Government.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was re-elected by the House of Peoples’ Representatives for another five-year term on October 5 and subsequently took the constitutional oath before Parliament.
