Diplomatic Community in Addis Ababa Extends Warm Irreecha Greetings to Ethiopians

Addis Ababa, October 3, 2026 (FMC) — Diplomatic missions based in Addis Ababa have joined Ethiopians in extending warm greetings and good wishes on the occasion of Irreecha, with messages celebrating the festival’s spirit of peace, unity, hope and shared goodwill.

Among others, the Embassies of the United Kingdom, United States, India, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Armenia, Iran and Pakistan, as well as the European Union Mission in Ethiopia, shared Irreecha greetings through their respective social media platforms.

The Embassy of India extended warm greetings to all celebrating the cherished Ethiopian cultural tradition, wishing that Irreecha would bring gratitude, peace, unity and renewed hope to families and communities across Ethiopia.

The EU Mission in Ethiopia similarly wished that the celebration would bring “peace, unity and renewed hope to all,” while the Embassy of Sweden expressed wishes for peace, unity and good fortune.

The German Embassy conveyed its wishes for happiness, peace and renewed hope, alongside an Oromo greeting welcoming the 2019 Ethiopian year’s Irreecha celebration.

The Embassy of Armenia extended its greetings to Ethiopians celebrating the thanksgiving festival, wishing for peace and prosperity, while the Embassy of Pakistan and the Embassy of Iran also shared messages wishing a happy Irreecha to those celebrating.

The United Kingdom, United States and Australian embassies likewise conveyed their greetings, wishing a happy Irreecha to Ethiopians marking the occasion.

Irreecha, the Oromo thanksgiving festival, marks the transition from the rainy season into the new season and is traditionally observed as a time of gratitude to Waaqa, renewal, community gathering and hope for the season ahead.

The messages from diplomatic missions add an international dimension to this year’s celebration, as Addis Ababa hosts Hora Finfinne Irreecha, bringing together people in a vibrant expression of Oromo cultural heritage and thanksgiving.

The greetings also reflect the goodwill extended by members of the diplomatic community in Ethiopia as the country celebrates one of its most prominent cultural occasions.
