Drought-Hit Communities in Afar Receive Relief as Regional and Federal Authorities Step Up Support

Addis Ababa, October 15, 2026 (FMC) — Drought-affected communities in Afar Region are receiving additional humanitarian assistance from the federal government as regional authorities intensify efforts to address the hardships facing vulnerable households.

A local official said the region had previously mobilized its own resources to support communities affected by drought, with the latest relief supplies dispatched by the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission supplementing those efforts.

Yesuf Mohammed, head of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Office in Bidu Woreda, said drought associated with climate change had caused significant hardship for local residents.

He described the humanitarian intervention as timely and essential in helping affected communities cope with the situation.

The ongoing distribution is intended to provide immediate relief to vulnerable households as authorities work to mobilize further assistance for communities facing the effects of drought.

The intervention reflects ongoing efforts by federal and regional authorities to support drought-affected populations and address food shortages in vulnerable areas of Afar Region.
