Ethiopia Advances African and Global South Priorities at UN Human Rights Council
Addis Ababa, October 9, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has concluded its participation in the 63rd regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva, advancing African and Global South priorities while contributing to multilateral deliberations on human rights, development and international cooperation.
Held from September 7 to October 7, the session adopted 34 resolutions, two decisions and a presidential statement, alongside interactive dialogues, panel discussions and the outcomes of the Universal Periodic Reviews of 14 countries.
Ethiopia participated both as a Council member and through its role in the Council’s leadership structures. In 2026, Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew Daka, Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, served as a Vice-President of the Council, contributing to its institutional and procedural work. Ethiopia also led the Council’s Accessibility Task Force.
During the session, the Ethiopian delegation engaged in discussions and negotiations on the right to development, international cooperation, transitional justice, technical assistance, accessibility, racial discrimination, emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, among other issues.
Ethiopia also participated in the consideration and voting on draft resolutions and decisions, articulating its national positions while supporting African priorities and broader Global South perspectives.
The engagement reaffirmed Ethiopia’s emphasis on constructive dialogue, national ownership, capacity-building and development-oriented approaches to promoting and protecting human rights, as well as its commitment to multilateral cooperation and African solidarity.
