Ethiopia and Nigeria Explore Food Security Cooperation, Investment and Stronger People-to-People Ties
Addis Ababa, October 7, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia and Nigeria have discussed potential areas of bilateral cooperation, with particular emphasis on food security, experience sharing, investment and stronger people-to-people relations.
Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh held discussions with Nigeria’s Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, who arrived in Addis Ababa on Tuesday for a three-day working visit.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the two sides extensively deliberated on collaboration and experience sharing aimed at ensuring food security in both countries.
Temesgen expressed appreciation to Nigeria for sending a high-level delegation to learn from the tangible results achieved through Ethiopia’s Seqota Declaration, a national initiative focused on ending child undernutrition and improving nutrition outcomes.
He also commended Vice President Shettima’s commitment to improving nutrition in Nigeria, describing it as exemplary leadership for the continent.
“Ethiopia and Nigeria are bound by a strategic partnership,” the Deputy Prime Minister said, noting that the significant population and economic potential of the two countries, when mobilized in a coordinated manner, can further strengthen their capacity to positively shape Africa’s future.
The discussions also highlighted measures to further strengthen diplomatic and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
Temesgen said Ethiopia has improved its diplomatic and service passport procedures for Nigerian nationals and implemented a visa-free travel arrangement for Nigerian citizens holding diplomatic and service passports.
Investment opportunities also featured in the discussions, with the Ethiopian side highlighting the significant contribution of Nigerian investor Aliko Dangote to Ethiopia’s development.
The two sides also discussed opportunities for other Nigerian investors to invest in various sectors of the Ethiopian economy.
